 Whatta rip-off! I’m talking about paying our Columbus GA and School Board Property taxes with a “debit or credit card”.. either online or in person! If you use such a card, you are charged a “2.5% convenience fee”.   As a former retailer who used credit/debit card transactions, transaction fees for merchants were quite different for "debit" and "credit" acceptances. While the banks have more "risk" and monitoring factors on "credit cards", "debit cards" usage with user PIN numbers were only charged a "swipe fee" for about 25-cents versus the 2.25-2.75% for "Credit Card" usage.. So, if you paid property taxes of $1,000.00, you get charged $25.00 to use either a credit or debit card.. if you paid $5,000.00 in taxes, you get a $125.00 add-on “convenience” fee.. and it takes the same amount of time to process the transaction. In other words… it penalizes housing and business RENTERS because the property owners can just add the fee into what rent families and businesses pay in rent, and it also penalizes homeowners who cannot pass that 2.5 percent onto someone else.

There used to be contract agreements (maybe even LAWS) forbidding merchants from offering "cash discounts" for not using a credit card, and consumers could not be charged a processing/convenience fee to use their credit card.. Obviously, rules & laws have been changed via politics...

 Now, do you know how MUCH in "convenience fees" does the processor collect on card usages for City collected fees? I'm imagining it's quite substantial... and substantial election/re-election donations are made by the financial processing personnel....so… which bank is collecting these "convenience fees"? I’ll let you know when Mayor Skippy or a Councilor.. or two.. tell us…

I got zero response from either Columbus GA Mayor Skippy the POO, nor any Councilor about the 400 plus growth in City employees in the past two years. Who hired them and where are they working? We know our Police Officer numbers are no more than the 2008 level when we voted in the Public Safety LOST that was to add 100 more police officers..
