When I left our subdivision Sunday morning, the US flags adorning homes and our neighborhood entry swelled my heart... with American pride and memories of past family members who gave their all for our country.. but then I got on Veterans Parkway... and found there was no concerted effort by our City leaders to honor the memory of our fallen military on Memorial Day weekend! After church, we rode down Broadway hoping UpTown might have picked up some of the slack.. but were further disappointed.. Following this ride, we got back on Veterans Parkway .... and rode all the way to Columbus Park Crossing before we cutting back West to go home .. WHERE WE KNEW OUR VETERANS WOULD BE REMEMBERED. My bride and I talked about how we went on a trip last year to see the Ark Encounter in KY. En route, we went into Corbin, KY where we visited two locations.. one was the original site of the first Col Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken, and the other was the Dr Thomas Walker State Historical Site in closeby Barbourville. The Walker site honors my 5th-Great-grand-father who built the first "European" house in Kentucky in 1750, nearly two decades before Daniel Boone went there.. but what we saw in Corbin, KY inspired Carol and I.. Corbin's streets were lined with light-post flags of pictures of Corbin residents who had served in our military.. We came home excited and reported our sightings to Columbus Council who shared the idea with UpTown Columbus as well..we even made a substantial donation pledge to kick things off when a plan was committed to.. that was last June.. we still haven't heard of any plan.. maybe next year...

While I know our military men and women are deserving of the best care our country can provide, I have this doubt about whether or not tunnels2towers.org is the tool to handle this. Have all the needs..and future needs of the NYC 1st Responders and their families been assured? If so, tunnels2towers.org should celebrate a complete victory.. then take a bow.. and retire.. Now we see fervent and emotional... and obviously expensive ads for more and more donations for non-NYC 1st Responders. I bring this up.. again, because my church is trying to do something about it through our Victory Mission site .. my church has contracted with Sylvan Learning Center to provide help to our volunteers how to better teach children how to catch up in reading ... they are not learning through the school system...

Obviously, when those NEW trash cans  were "chosen",  Columbus, GA City officials must have been inside some area/building not affected by weather. After ours was delivered Tuesday, I put it under the eaves of our home, and then much needed rains came Wednesday, and  a goodly amount of water was captured by the concave design of the top.. I opened the can yesterday to put a bag of trash in it, and a lot of the water flowed into the can itself  (the top's hinge design directed much of the water inside).  Do I have to spell out what water, trash, and sweltering summer heat will cause those cans to smell like when they sit there  a week between pick-ups? And do I have to spell out what contained pockets of water will do for the birth rate of mosquitoes? Maybe some of those "self-aggrandizing  pats on each others' backs backs" should be sped up and delivered  to someone's backside...

GA Governor Kemp just added another 6 weeks suspension of state assessed gasoline excise tax to the original May 31st date..Unfortunately, Georgians necessarily won't be the biggest benefactors. Even though only 30,000 of 120,000 registered voters in Columbus (Muscogee County) GA were aware enough to cast votes locally on Tuesday, winners are to be congratulated and let's move forward.. unfortunately, this will happen again in 2 years because politicians are reluctant to change what works to keep themselves in office. I haven't seen the overall votes for the multi-county River Valley Region TSPLOST vote results, but looking at the local Columbus, GA voting precincts counts for the "TSPLOST", it's quite depressing that the precincts that are most affected by the most regressive of taxes .. sales taxes... voted to extend the TSPLOST tax on themselves for the next 10 years.. you would think that the Councilors (and Mayor) for those precincts would have advised.. encouraged.. their constituents to vote "NO"..

Well... one of our 3 City Trash (the garbage one) cans got delivered yesterday around lunch time.. Well, delivered is not exactly the word that best describes what actually happened... a can was left in the middle of our driveway entrance which made my wife get out of her car.. leave our 8 month old grandson alone in her car while she moved it down to the garage area, then hike back to her car so she could now park it. Must say.. while the City paid less than I anticipated for the new cans, I cannot say I was impressed with the long range durability of them..

Our church is desperately hunting member volunteers to help teach reading skills to school aged students we reach at our South Columbus Mission Church facility. Every one of them is enrolled in the MCSD.... I asked why should we have to be doing this...shouldn't these students ability to read at there grade level be a... nom THE.. prerequisite to be graduated to their next grade! It's primarily the lack of reading skills that entrap people into poverty!

When I was sixteen, my summer construction job paid $1.15 per hour , and I netted about $40.00 a week.. gasoline was about 25-to-30 cents a gallon, so a fill-up may cost $6.00 max ,and I used maybe 2 tanks a week. That left me with about $28.00 for personal uses such as dating and fast food (McD burgers were 15-cents, Dinglewood hotdogs with chili were 20-cents) and going to Columbus Foxes/Confederate Yankees baseball games at Golden Park.. My gas needs are about the same now.. a couple of tanks per week for both my bride and me, but a fill-up now runs between $65-$80.00 dollars for regular gas and up to $75-$100.00 on premium.. Gas purchases now run between $240-$400 a WEEK.. twice as much as it did when JoKKKe Biden took office on Day 1...and the price of "fast food" has soared! Hey libs.. having second thoughts at spurning Trump for his tweets compared to what Biden's policies are doing for your finances, families, and future?

 

Current Columbus, GA Mayor Skip must really be getting desperate! We got a 2nd campaign flyer yesterday, and this time Mayor Skip is attacking John Anker based on Anker not having "time" to "Learn about leadership, Learn how Council works, nor learn about budgeting"..Excuse me? First, Anker will have 7 months before taking control in January of 2023, but Anker already has proven his leadership, and his financial budgeting skills as a successful BUSINESSMAN! On the other hand, not only does Mayor Skip have a City Manager and TWO Deputy City Managers, until recently, Skip also had hired A DEPUTY MAYOR, and our City is still not operating on "all 8 cylinders", plus with garbage and debris pickups being an embarrassing frustration for our taxpayers, and with the police officers losing confidence in Mayor Skip, Skip is probably not going to learn anymore leadership and budgeting skills in the next 7 months..

Remember the "Help Save Hilton" effort when former Mayor TT Tom-LYING-son and Councilman Henderson were promoting a T.A.D. proposal to build an "affordable high density housing project" at the intersection of Wynnton Road @ Hilton Ave & N. Dixon? MidTown reacted, and project got waylaid. Well, yesterday, I saw this comment made in a Historic Columbus E-mail :

"In May 2018, Historic Columbus joined with Help Save Hilton to oppose a 94 – unit residential development on the property located at 2551 Wynnton Road, also known as the historic Hilton property. Historic Columbus made an offer in January 2019 to the Eakle family for $1.2M. It was respectfully rejected with no counter. In April of that year, the Atlanta developer, TBG, was officially denied their appeal with DCA for the low-income housing tax credits."

What I want to know is why the City still taxes the property at FMV of $320,890.00 when the owners flatly REJECTED an offer of $1.2 MILLION dollars for it? I also want to question why Mayor Skip was granted permission to erect a large campaign sign on that property? Looks like a cozy .. maybe TOO COZY.. situation.

Is it just me or have you noticed an almost absence of crime being reported here in Columbus.. It's still going on strong in Macon, Eufaula, Auburn-Opelika,and Lagrange without missing a beat.. but all of a sudden.. things seem pretty peaceful here in Columbus...Could it simply be local elections being voted on as we speak?
