If there was any unsportsmanlike action by anybody, it was the runner trying to persuade the ump he was SAFE.. While reading this story, I remembered the very first Little League game I ever umpired (at age 15 in 1962) A revered name in Columbus GA Peach Little League history umpire recruited and mentored me.. The first couple of innings of the “B League” game were pretty uneventful, but in the 3rd inning, the younger brother of a friend of mine hit a fly ball down the short right field line…I was the base umpire so I watched the runner while the home plate umpire watched to determine if the hit was “fair or foul”..He signaled a home run just as the hitter watched the ball clear the fence.. In his joy, he
“celebrated” by joyously leaping high into the air as he approached 1st base.. In his joy, he missed tagging 1st base (and not even barely.. he missed it by a couple of feet). The batter continued his “home run trot” basking in his glory as his friends on the other team congratulated him as he passed each base and crossed the plate.. Play was resumed, and the opposing coach had his pitcher call for a ruling on whether the runner touched 1st base. My mentor deferred to me as I was the base umpire, and I signaled him out.. because I’d seem the runner miss it. It was the 3rd out so teams swapped positions.. I walked to my mentor and told him how bad I felt, but I’d seen the play, and made the correct call.. He put his hand on my shoulder, and told me I had made the right call… then he gave me a tip that I honored .. and lived by for the next 30 years of volunteer umpiring…He said, “Hal… as soon as I see a ball hit for a home run, I immediately turn around to the bleachers and find the player’s mother and daddy and watch them enjoy their son’s excitement… that way, if the runner misses 1st base, I do not see it, and therefore cannot call him out.”

I think baseball announcing crews need to be REQUIRED to have an umpire in the booth! I cringe every time some announcer points out what he thinks is the importance of a catcher "framing" a pitch.. It has no bearing on an umpire's call! I umpired Little League games for 30 years, and long before the ball reached the catcher, I had already made my decision... it's only a called strike if the ball crosses some portion of home plate within the strike zone parameters. Where the catcher catches it makes no difference to an umpire.

If California does arrest the guards, they'll be out on "no cash bail" in time to re-apply for their jobs and be back working the next morning... or.. or if prisoners are arrested and charged with sexual harassment, they get out on "no cash bail" and just mingle in the streets of California "safe cities" rather than return to jail...

THe basic reason for the alarm system is to warn residents of an impending tsunami headking for the islands, and for residents to seek higher grounds. If the alarm HAD BEEN SOUNDED, many residents would have raced to higher grounds and placed in the path of the out-of-control fires, rather that staying close enough to the coast and being able to jump into the water to save their lives.

Two months ago, I posted a picture of the knocked over sign at the new VA Clinic on River Road here in Columbus, GA.. Last weekend, I noticed a truck and crew finally addressing it… When I went back by the next day, they had erected a temporary sign in from of the knocked over one.. I thought… hmmm.. the original sign was not “electrified”, so why didn’t they just pick it up, dust it off, and re-anchor it better on the existing foundation? But this is how government works..
