Just a teaser of sorts, but it may be a solution to a number of social problems. Approach manufacturers to build plants inside the wall of prisons that will utilize upward of 50% of the inmates in productive jobs at competitive outside wages. Prisoners would get paid, from which a certain amount be deducted to pay for their incarceration costs, and the rest divvied up to support a prisoner's family on the outside, or repayment of welfare payments to such a family, and/or to a savings account the prisoner could access when his jail term is complete. This would take the burden off of taxpayers, be an incentive for manufacturers to revive the "made in America" label, and prisoners would have the incentive to have a productive life while in prison or do the other menial jobs basic prisoners do.

If you're trying to figure out why there's such a gap in intelligent action emanating from the US Senate, wonder no more; Dianne Feinstein, D&D of CA, is the Senate Intelligence Committee Chair.

The 10K Olympic race was amazing. The British runner was somewhat of favorite , but when the American runner finished second, outsprinting several highly ranked African long distance runners, the announcers were basically to unprepared to celebrate. The best they could do was say Galen Rupp was the winner's (Mo Farah) training partner in Oregon. Rupp won the first medal by an American since 1964, and only the third in the past 100 years.

It's also amazing that the knowledge of how much tax the IRS takes out of the Olympic cash awards is alarming to people. I went to lunch at Chick-fil-A yesterday to show my family's support for Dan Cathy's stance and rights under the First Amendment. I arrived at 11:50 at the Wynnton Road Chick-fil-A for a take out order for my wife, daughters, and myself. The parking lot was jammed with cars and a drive-thru line of cars that wrapped around the building twice. If I had driven up on another day and saw such, I'd have just driven on to some other food place, but not yesterday. Inside, lines were from the counter to the exits and then some; inside the Chick-fil-A was an incredible situation; young and old, black and white, civilian and military, standing patiently in line, glad to be there, feeling each other's support for being there at this moment in time.. in a word..focused. This is the America our forefathers fought to give us. This is the freedom our forefathers used to overthrow an oppressive government.

If you didn't go to Chick-fil-A yesterday, shame on you! But you can make up for it... send Chick-fil-A coupons to the President, and Mayors of Chicago, Boston, and Washington, D.C.. Better yet, send them a Chick-fil-A gift card and write on it with a Sharpie "Obama Campaign Staff" so Chick-fil-A owners and employees will know we support them.

Something is amiss in the communications department at the MCSD board... DOH!

The newspaper reported that the old library building would be ravaged and turned into a parking lot because of damages caused by vandals/whomever. Cathy Williams said it was going to be used as storage (have e-mail). Looks like another historic Columbus building under the control of the MCSD will be torn down for failure of the MCSD to have adequate security or adequate ongoing maintenance programs. Hell, the MCSD will probably ask for another SPLOST to resurrect the building, only it will be an Action Metal Shed.

Instead of doubling the costs to taxpayers for indigent burials by cremation and interment at Porterdale Cemetery, Council should consider using the land thought to be a historic cemetery (but was determined no grave sites existed so Council used tax dollars to turn it into a park) as a new cemetery for future indigent burials. Or, if Council just buys it's own kiln, it can do cheaper cremations, then disperse the ashes over the whitewater course to save any interment costs.

A L-E story about a Phenix City situation needs to be analyzed very closely. A teacher and bookkeeper were involved in a theft scheme and got caught. Larry Dichara made a statement that has upset me. The Phenix City schools superintendent, said his system has a zero tolerance for theft, especially when it's money that could have gone toward students. "Zero intolerance...especially when it's money that could have gone toward students"...HUH? Since when do we qualify whether theft has degrees of tolerance? This coming from the head of a school system should definitely not be tolerated by any citizen/taxpayer!

Reports are coming in that the GSA, which was exposed for it's extravagant Las Vegas romp, is now being shown in even worse light. Bonuses to workers totaled $44,000,000.00 last year, Even though the GSA accounts for 'only' 1% of federal employees, their bonuses totaled 10% of all the bonuses various government employees received. In addition, it was revealed that the GSA has 14,000 buildings/offices that 'we' pay for that are either under- or not utilized at all. Let's have an audit of the building the GSA owns/rents and see how many are owned by politicians or family members.

L-E story: "The property at 1200 Bradley Drive that once was home to the Muscogee County School District's administrative offices has been officially transferred to the Columbus Museum." -- One technical point is not clear: Officially, the Columbus Museum is already under the MCSD system. In fact, because of the Columbus Museum, the MCSD gets an extra 5 mils of property taxing power that other school systems do not. Now, if the transfer was to the Museum, why was this necessary, and something else to wonder about is whether the transfer deeding public property was made to the Columbus Museum Foundation which is a private organization.

Now that the voters in the Republican Primary have spoken about limiting lobbyist gifts, maybe the Muscogee representatives will unite and end an even worse ethics situation, that of accepting/giving donation from one campaign account to another's campaign account. At best, the practice is one of laundering money by allowing one donor to max out donations, then give a similar amount to another politician to pass it along to the same candidate.

As a rule, I can live with political races that don't get the results I hope for, but I do not understand how the regional T-SPLOST tax passed. From the L-E, "(Carmen) Cavezza said he thought voters in the region saw the necessity of the tax, because it was the only way some of the projects would get done. * “There was no alternative,” Cavezza said. “It had to happen or these projects weren't going to happen.” -- This is BS! The alternative is/was to wait for funds to be there and projects get done as funds become available. There is no guarantee that the 10 year, 1% tax will actually generate the all necessary funds to begin with; then what?

SPLOSTs and LOSTs lull voters to think someone else will pay for what is basically a giant credit card for politicians so they can go on a spending spree with other people's money that may or may not become available to pay the bill when it comes due.

Statewide T-SPLOST results: "In addition to the River Valley District, only Central Savannah River District looked like they would pass the tax. * The nine other districts, including the Atlanta District, appeared to defeat the tax plan. Atlanta’s effort was being hammered by about a 65-36 percent vote." -- Amazing... Atlanta, home of the governor and the state legislatures, destination of hundreds of thousand tourists/visitors who pay sales taxes in that area, had voters that saw through the BS of politicos, and voted down the self-imposed stupidity tax. Other than the lottery, there is no more regressive tax voters can impose on themselves, or their communities than an increased sales tax.

The only races that truly disappointed me were the Marshal's & Municipal Court clerk's races. Both offices incumbent have been connected to a white-washed scandal involving grant money one of the spouses garnered for a dubious program.

The attorney general left foreign passports on the list with no additional qualifications." -- Under what reasoning can the state Attorney General justify not requiring someone here with a foreign passport to provide documentation that he/she is currently legally in our country and our state when applying for assistance?

From the 'why is it" department - L-E story: "New Orleans - A study on possible effects of the 2010 BP oil spill indicates dispersants MAY have killed plankton" -- Why is it that some people will fight like hell FOR a cause based on "maybe" yet will fight just as hard against whether or not God may exist?

L-E story: "The city of Columbus wants to start using cremation in as many indigent burials as possible to extend the life of Porterdale Cemetery, according to Pat Biegler, director of public services. * Cremations are also more expensive than burials, she said. * The city would pay $600 per cremation compared to the $350 per traditional burial, Biegler suggested, because funeral homes must pay a crematory about $315 per cremation." -- Why not buy a kiln and cremate bodies on the spot? Council has already acquiesced to buying a stump grinder to wean the City off using professionals (who aren't on the City retirement plan) to grind up stumps on an as needed basis, so why not a City owned crematory kiln? Or, while cruder, why doesn't the City just use one of the large sized 'chippers' it already has, and dispose of the bodies by dispersing the remains as mulch all over the cemetery?
