Update: No sooner than I get the 14th homicide written up when word of number 15 hits the news circuit...another killing in the Wilson Homes area off Veterans Parkway.. God help us! With 15 now, the Homicides per 100,000 in Columbus moves back over 49. This makes Columbus a contender for the Number 1 ranking in the US.

Wow! About 10 days ago.. I questioned a pact between a specific MCSD school and the United Way community fund.. I was concerned that money from the community to help fund local social problems would get redirected.. Now I've learned that the connection is a Department of Education GRANT money (non-voluntary tax dollars... basically confiscated) is the funding source... and it's a huge one of $2,500,000.00 over 5 years, so one elementary school is getting a $500,000.00 "strings-attached" annually for 5 years.. for a school with 500 +/- students (quick math shows an additional $1,000.00 per student per year for 5 years). Now, since it is a "grant", then why doesn't the MCSD apply for it directly? This way. one less "set of fingers" would take their "share" of the expense money from it...

1 - Getting all local elections on the November ballot rather than the GA Primary date. Columbus/Muscogee County election are held in in May or June, but new officials don't take office until January. Not only do the primaries not attract a heavy local vote, those who get outed still have 6 or 7 months to literally "wreak havoc, and/or close up evidentiary loose ends.

2 - This should the law in every county in GA: All referendums on local sales taxes MUST be held on the General Election date. Our Muscogee County School System comes after our wallets every 5 years with a E-SPLOST wish list to keep the 1% sales tax flowing into it's coffers, and the MCSD intentionally schedules them on early presidential or General primary dates when general voter interest is lowest, and the MCSD employees and family member have the most influence on the vote tallies.. ALL TAX referendums should be restricted to being voted on during the General Election date each year.

 This is something I'm "more than curious" about... how... why... are the Senate Democrats getting to be in charge of committee assignments and chairmanships. We are "told" that since there are 50 Republicans and 50 Democrats, and the Vice-President of the Senate is a Democrat, the the Democrats are the "majority".. but... but in actuality, there are 50 Senators who were elected as Republicans, 48 Senators elected as Democrats, and 2 Senators (Bernie of Vermont and King of Maine) elected as INDEPENDENTS, so in reality, the Republicans are the majority, and should be in charge of committee leadership.

It's gotta STOP! This plague of shooting homicides on the streets of Columbus.. My last Friday's edition of the "Breakfast Club Blog" brought up the 11th homicide, but as soon as I published it, a story about Columbus, GA's 12th homicide was coming online! 12 street killings! 12 in 6 weeks of 2021.. this puts Columbus, GA on a path for potentially (at this rate) 104 homicides in 2021! On a "per 100,000 basis, that scales out as nearly 53 per 100,000... and that's high in the Top 10 of cities with the most homicides per 100,000 in population.. Boy.. this figure is gonna look great.... NOT... as it shows up in the safety data used by the Chamber of Commerce and Real Estate companies here in Columbus to "sell" Columbus as a place to relocate/expand businesses or bring in new or hold on to current families. Right now, I'm praying hat this number of 12 holds out before I publish this comment...

 

UPDATE!: No sooner than I reported the 12 homicide in 2021 for Columbus, GA than number 13 happens. There are years that we didn't have 13 homicides in them, but now we have 13 in less than 6 weeks! Lord... help us!!!
