Why are public buildings in Columbus, GA so inadequately built/maintained? We just heard the new judicial building at the old Government Center is predicted $50 Million more than the voters approved (over 28% higher) , and looking back at the jail building options presented in January, at $400-$500 dollars a square ft when there is no cost for land acquisition is mind boggling! I had first hand experience trying to donate money for a new building at a youth sports facility earlier this year and was shocked at the "estimates" of $320-$350 a square foot for a building with no kitchen expenses. On top of the cost was the fact it was already City property, and it would take a $16,500.00 test to see if the land would drain properly (and the spot for construction was on one of the highest spots on the entire property. In comparison, a new home in a nice location was being offered.. including the land it sits on.. for $140.00 a square foot - with a nicely appointed kitchen. I'd also like to know who Jericho Design Consultants are and why they are involved in so many City of Columbus, GA construction issues. Even the name is suspect (the walls of Jericho tumbled down) and that's what's happened to so many City and School buildings in Columbus less than 5O years old ... and yet the City just spent $50 million acquiring a much older Uptown building for numerous offices. Are any officials in the City benefiting from what's being paid to Jericho Design Consultants? I have two words for this: FORENSIC AUDIT!

Last night was National Night Out and members of our Police, Sheriff, Fire, and EMT departments joined our (and many others throughout Columbus, GA) – neighborhood for an opportunity to get to know each other in a less stressful circumstance. Really wish some of our Councilors and City Executives had joined in as well.
