You\’d thinkt a local journalist to be more interested in getting his facts correct.. the current Golden Park facility wasn't erected until 1951... Now.. It is the Braves AA team from Mississippi.. which is good because it is AA level, but there are caveats.. First of which is, “When will the team change it’s name? Rome, GA has the “A” Braves minor league franchise, but the team has changed it’s “name” to the Rome Emperors” .. mainly because it couldn’t sell many souvenir items because, like Columbus, GA, every local baseball fan already HAS a Braves hat, Jersey, or t-shirt.
Second is, “What are the terms of the lease, and how long is the lease valid?” If the Mayor is so intent on spending $50 Million dollars on providing a facility, and has a bond rate of 3.00% for , say 30 years, it will cost over $231,000.00 a month ($2,772,000.00 annually)
Thirdly, does the lease give the owner “an out” if attendance rates are lower than a certain number.. the team was averaging 2,500 in Mississippi, but that was not high enough for the owners to keep the team there… and no past Columbus minor league team has ever come CLOSE to averaging that many fans per game..
Hey, Columbus GA Council.. beware what you wish for!

Wow! I just thought of the PERFECT NEW NAME for our minor league baseball team! How about the “Columbus COWS”! It’s a natural.. Kadie the Cow could be it’s mascot.. Kadie could be placed outside the stadium overlooking the alligators in the Chattahoochee River, and all the East Bound traffic coming in over the Oglethorpe Bridge from Alabama would meb met with a view of Kadie’s rear end! Gosh.. even Chick-fil-A might donate one of it’s Cow Costumes for the mascot!

WRBL-TV3 story – Columbus, GA: “ A pay raise is coming to Columbus Police Department (CPD) officers in the coming weeks. These raises will require reallocation of funds from the Other Local Options Sales Tax (OLOST), a 1% public safety sales tax, passed in 2008. * The $5,000 pay raises for sworn CPD officers and E-911 communications technicians could go into effect as early as March of this year. * In order to fund the approved pay increase, the city will be required to reallocate funds for 44 unfilled positions budgeted through OLOST each year. CPD would be left with budget availability for 372 sworn officer positions, down from 416.” – Wait a minute! The 2008 OLOST promised us an extra 100 Police Officers, not 44..and. according to a former Columbus Councilor, OLOSY money collected for such was supposed to be kept, not spent on other budget items. Based on the 70% rate of the OLOST designated for the attainment and retention of 100 police officers, Columbus has received $17-to-$$28 Million annually.. and at $5,000.00 per officer pay raises, 372 such raises would ”only” be $1,860,000.00.. WHERE IS THE CITIZENS MONEY!
