Sheldon Whitehouse defends membership in exclusive beach club: 'A long tradition in Rhode Island' * In Pawtucket, R.I., Friday, Whitehouse was approached by a reporter from GoLocalProv.com who asked if Bailey’s Beach Club in Newport had admitted any minority members since the publication first asked the senator about it in 2017. * “I think the people who are running the place are still working on that,” Whitehouse replied. “And I’m sorry it hasn’t happened yet.” * Pressed about the apparent hypocrisy of his vocal condemnation of systemic racism while maintaining a decades-long membership in the exclusive club, Whitehouse said, “It’s a long tradition in Rhode Island, and there are many of them, and I think we just need to work our way through the issues" -- "need to work our way through the issues"? I took Rhode Island 190 years to "work through the slavery issue", but since slavery has been "illegal" there since 1943, is Bailey's Beach Club feel it doesn't need to integrate until a similar time period has passed?

 

Note: "According to the Providence Journal, Bailey's Beach in Newport Rhode Island was founded in the 1890s after new trolley service gave mill workers from Fall River ready access to Easton's Beach, a wide expanse closer to downtown Newport that the well-to-do had claimed as their own. Not wishing to associate with people who took their lunches in buckets, high society relocated several miles to Spouting Rock, smaller and often seaweedy but safely beyond the reach of trolleys. Today, approximately 500 families belong, and for the most part, new members are added only when old ones die." -- Hmmm.. Doesn't appear that Bailey's Beach Club is "friendly" to working class Rhode Islanders either...

Asian alone, percent(a) 15.5%
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone, percent(a) 0.5%
Two or More Races, percent 4.0%
Hispanic or Latino, percent(b) 39.4%
White alone, not Hispanic or Latino, percent 36.5%

Add all those "percentages" up and you get a population demographics of 175.9 percent of physical count...

Online story: "In a ruling that could help push changes in college athletics, the Supreme Court on Monday unanimously sided with a group of former college athletes in a dispute with the NCAA over rules limiting certain compensation. * The high court ruled that NCAA limits on the education-related benefits that colleges can offer athletes who play Division I basketball and football can't be enforced. * The case doesn't decide whether students can be paid salaries. Instead, the ruling will help determine whether schools decide to offer athletes tens of thousands of dollars in education-related benefits for things such as computers, graduate scholarships, tutoring, study abroad and internships." -- Hmmm... what this decision does is re-open the door for College athletic boosters and booster groups, and individual player agents to rejoin the "recruiting wars".

The Columbus L-E is up to 35 homicides here in Columbus... like it's other local reporting, by the time the L-E prints something, it's no longer news.. Sunday's Father's Day murder is at least the 38th...and possibly 40th if the 80+ year old couple found in the house fire are victims of foul play as is very possible. But, regardless of L-E accuracy, this year is less than half gone but we've already experienced close to last year's total homicides.

Gobbledygook! That what I get out of the report of Columbus' status in the Sunday L-E.... It said that as of June 16th, 33% of our residents have received at least 1 dose of vaccine...and more than 160,000 doses have been administered. What it doesn't say is how many have been fully vaccinated or how many of those single doses were the J&J version that requires only 1 dose..also.. since Columbus' 2020 Census population numbers is about 198,000, the numbers quoted seem questionable.. Theoretically, if we have 33% of 198,000 with at least one dose, that's only about 64,700 with 1 (or more) doses, yet we don't know how many are fully vaccinated.. and if the local goal is now 40%, why is that something to be celebrated when nationally the numbers is about 66%. For full disclosure.. all members of my family have been fully vaccinated except for one member who tested positive for the virus antibodies.
