Hey, Columbus, GA Council... and citizens!

 

We received a campaign "flyer" for the City's $400,000,000.00 SPLOST we are voting on now through November 2nd. There were elements of the "flyer that elevated my curiosity.. ......and suspicion.. First.. was the "postage" statement.. it was mailed from Savannah, GA (Permit #1473).. so I "DuckDuckGO-ed" it and finally found a reference for "Forward Columbus" that wasn't about Columbus, Ohio...Finding out our "Forward Columbus" was "dissolved" as a GA company in 2018, so I further looked up the address given in the Columbus Property Tax database...and found it.. with 2 entries.. one for "Forward Columbus" and another for the principals OF "Forward Columbus" with a H1 Exemption in a neat East Wynnton neighborhood. Something is not "kosher" here...

 

Oh.. the "flyer" itself certainly "skirted" some worthy information.. It doesn't mention replacing the Government Center nor the $400,000,000.00 (close to half-a-BILLION) minimum goal. Nor does it mention that Council recently added $50-MILLION worth of bond debt on the property tax payers' backs buying out the Synovus building covering most of the 1100 block of Broadway and 1st Avenue. The "flyer" also.. "tiptoes" through some sketchy information about past and future spendings.. It mentions future spendings on "Recreation facility improvements" (but conveniently does not mention the Indoor Aquatic Center that's a financial DRAIN on property taxes) , and throws in "Public safety ENHANCEMENTS for first responders (though does not mention what "enhancements" are nor that how they've fooled us once with the ongoing "Public Safety SPLOST", nor does it mention the Government Service Center next door to the Aquatic Center.

The "FLYER" also tries to minimize the $400,000,000.00 as only a 70% portion of a penny on Columbus taxpayers yet we know better as every Columbus taxpayer will pay the full
"penny" increase which is actually a 12.5% increase in our already high sales tax line-up.

website, you can verify  Forward Columbus' questionable validity as a current state corporation. Maybe one of the Councilors can furnish us with information as to whether "Forward Columbus, LLC" is a currently licensed Columbus business concern.

Oh! Think about this.. Every building in the Synovus property the City just bought is way older that the Government Center that needs replacing because of the poor maintenance record of the City.. Based on the Government Center issue in just 50 years of existence, how long will the newest City acquisition remain viable since the newest structure of the property is already over 70 years old?
