Columbus Council is doing it "to us".... AGAIN! In the Columbus L-E yesterday:

The Muscogee County Board of Elections and Registration hereby calls for a special election to be held in conjunction with the General Primary/Nonpartisan Election scheduled for May 24, 2022, for the purpose of submitting to the voters of Muscogee County in all precincts the following question: "Shall County's transportation system and the transportation network in this region and the state be improved by providing for a 1 percent special district transportation sales and use tax for the purpose of transportation projects and programs for a period of 10 years?" --

Here we go again.. Council indicated that it's minimum 10 year $400,000,000.00 SPLOST could keep our sales taxes at 8% if the existing T-SPLOST was allowed to end.. but here they go re-supporting a 10 year extension during the primary elections rather than on the General Election Date in November. This Council shows it knows no shame! Thus, Council is trying to raise our sales taxes by 12.5% ... again!

Our property taxes are created by two taxing authorities.. the Council and the MCSB. About 40% of our property taxes go to the City, and 60% go to the MCSD, and Council has diverted $10,000,000.00.. including $6,000,000.00 that would normally go to the MCSD, and put it into the hands of an elected MCSB member who has the power to vote for raising our school taxes to make up for the shortage.. there should be a law against that... Wait a minute, there is one! Council should revoke their approval until the elected MCSB member resigns... either from the School Board ..or... from NeighborworksColumbus .

Lat week, I wrote about the distribution of $1,600.00 via EBT cards to possibly 12,000 (or more) MCSD students who are considered Title 1 qualified (or just attend a totally Title 1 designated school). I have yet to hear any statement refuting this issue.. in other words, elementary, middle school, and high school students are carrying around , basically, $1,600.00 debit cards.. wonder how many will be "bought" by scavenging denizen of the streets for cash at a substantially lower value.. it happens with SNAP and Food Stamp cards all the time...

You know, when researching the land donated to the new Neighborworks Columbus project, I noticed that when the property "changed hands", those 38 +/- acres had been valued by the City at "only" $175,000.00 (and only $2,800.00 were paid in taxes) but... BUT after the donation, the same acres were tax valued at $1.7 Million (and new tax value became $31,200.00 plus per year).. Interesting... at how much the City left on the table ANNUALLY until the donation..

I'm wondering if streaming apps on our TVs are conspiring against us? When I watch cable TV, we set the sound volume around level 8 and get consistency for all the cable stations.. but when we go to a streaming channel, volume level 8 no longer is adequate... and even level in the high-teens isn't adequate either. We find ourselves bumping the volume level into the 30s-40s and often that's not enough. Then, when you go back to regular cable channels, unless you've returned to the volume to level 8, we get our ears blown off. I remember when Congress finally got laws passed to prohibit TV channels from broadcasting the volume of the show at one level, then bumping the volume for the ads to a much higher level so "we hear it from the kitchen or bathroom".

Now that Columbus GA Council and the Columbus, GA Taxpayers have digested the "affordable" home program NEIGHBORWORKS COLUMBUS got Council to approve .. here are a few of more "items" to digest .. and ask questions about:

1 - Who will be the contractor(s) and what grades of material will be used?

2 - What are the contingency plans for material and labor costs with all the current inflation pressures carried forward?

3 - Since these will be aimed at 55-plus aged inhabitants.. and "rent-to-own" , who is responsible for home repairs/maintenance and general upkeep and landscaping costs? Unless the individuals, not the taxpayers, are held responsible.. they are not "affordable housing".. they are basically redefined "projects".

4 - How will the individual insurance coverage be handled.... obviously these homes will be built in close proximity of each other so fires are likely to affect homes nearby..

5 - Who will monitor the homesteads to make sure all are good neighbors and take take of their property.. what about rental units next to/between.near mortgaged units?

6 - Why are these being built with 3 bedrooms.... do the planners feel that 55-ups will be having new babies to raise, or expect them to raise their adult children,  or their grandchildren there, too?

NEIGHBORWORKS Columbus's project is a $40,000,000.00 "venture" and individual homes will be available as "rent-to-own" which is a great way to eliminate the ugliness of having "skin-in-the-game" down payments for buyers, public attention drawing attention foreclosures down the road..Basically, some organization will become a "landlord" on all the units...I'm not sure whether it will the City or NEIGHBORWORKS Columbus.. but Columbus taxpayers will get the "short straw" in the deal. Another aspect not mentioned is that $40,000,000.00 divided by 229 assorted units comes to an average per unit cost of $174,000.00 - plus per unit.. The for sale sale units are "priced" (obviously taxpayer supplemented) at $120,000.00 to $160,000.00 so off the bat, each unit will be at a loss of between $54,000.00 and $14,000.. There are several other issues not being brought up, but stopping here to let this digest...

The second local "rabbit hole biggie" of the day comes through our public school system..In the last few days, teenagers have received cards like this if they are considered Title 1 students or attend a school deemed 100% Title 1.

The cards are for $1,600.00 EACH! Remember, these were sent directly to the students.. not distributed from schools nor addressed to their parents. They were mailed to the students at their listed home addresses. According to MCSD figures on the website, just students listed as recipients of free/reduced lunch is a figure of 12,373 out of 31,899 total students (the total number of students getting "free" lunches was not readily available of the MCSD website, so will work with know numbers, but the figures you see will be low).. The MCSD website lists 12,373 students are listed as reduced/free lunch recipients out of 31899, but many schools are considered 100% Title 1. Using the 12,373 published number, and the $1,600.00 for each card, over $19,000,000.. yes over $19 MILLION Dollars... has been put in the hands of children..This is what was stuffed into that bill purported to fight Covid-19 issues. At best, this is a vote-buying attempt by the Democratic Party!
