From the "__it's hit the fan' department - Remember the "affordable housing project headed by Cathy Williams, founder and CEO/President of NeighborWorks Columbus, and an elected member of the Muscogee County School Board? Well, the Columbus (GA) L-E and WRBL-TV3 have finally addressed the issues .. in different ways... The L-E has exposed real issues with the legality of the situation.. while it appeared that the City's legal department had done "due diligence", it also appears not all the "due diligence" DUE was done.. it appears that details about WHO the elected official was in relationship to conflict of being an elected official involved in a T.A.D. "deal" was avoided... and even the Assistant Attorney General of GA has begun to "walk back" his opinion since he's heard that the "employee" in question is actually the "head honcho" . One of the most damning arguments is that it's been stated that Cathy Williams "has no financial interest in the project because (get this) her compensation is not contingent on the success of the project"! Good grief.. she's the CEO of the non-profit and draws a 6-figure salary with potential bonuses and raises! Another thing that bothers me about the Council's initial approval is that it seems Cathy Williams brought up the Council's approval of using the T.A.D. at the high-end development at Midland Commons.. (I agree with her on this.. and T.A.D. funds being used on another high-end project downtown) and she "guilted" Council a bit by doing so.. Hey Council! It's time to put ALL the cards on the table... FACE UP this time! Thank goodness Charmaine Crabb, Toyia Tucker, and Glenn Davis aren't laying down (I've been told another Councilor is not happy as well, but that name was not mentioned in this story).

Hey, GA Assistant Attorney General.. another thing to consider is that the MCSB is a TAXING AUTHORITY on it's own, and has a bigger stake in the deferred property tax funds than the City does!

Oh! Thanks Nick Wooten at the Columbus L-E! I cannot remember a well researched.. and reported story being carried in the L-E in YEARS!.

 

Now, the WRBL-TV3 story needs to be parsed.. it's basically a rewrite of William's story she told to the congregation at First Baptist only it has Phil Scoggins' byline. Unfortunately, WRBL did this fluff story without full disclosure.. Cathy Williams's husband is Chuck Williams, WHO'S ON THE STAFF at WRBL!

I brought up a somewhat "iffy" situation over the past two weeks... concerning an elected Columbus, GA school board official with taxing influence running a "non-profit" housing program that will get $10,000,000.00 property tax dollars out of the City and School Board tax revenues. Sadly, I didn't hear responses/concern from from any of the Council or School Board members, but I also didn't hear any of our Councilors nor School Board members DEFEND the person's situation... Maybe not all is lost.
