In a Columbus L-E story, I-Chief Mathis said: “My goal when I first came here was to eliminate everyone leaving," Mathis said. "You can't make them stay, but what you can do is you can make the work environment so enticing that people feel like they're part of a family and they don't want to leave." * Mathis said that the Columbus Police Department is currently around 190 officers down from the budgeted figure. About 292 officers are currently on street detail. * "My contention is, if we pay them more and we do a better job recruiting we can at least get back up to 400 police officers," Mathis said. He said that if he had 100 more police officers than what he currently has he could put more of his strategic crime reduction plans into place.: -- Whoa! When the 2008 Public Safety LOST was passed, Columbus had about 300 police officers nad the new tax revenue source was to enable adding 100 more getting us up to 400 +/- officers.. but that figure has never been met.. former Chief Blackmon did “mention” he’d like to have a total od close to 480, but that’s never been an approved Council goal.. Now.. if “44 unfilled positions” are “eliminated”.. it brings into focus what do with the money that’s “purportedly” been set aside (in our “rainy day fund” from the 2008 law as not too be spent on things not specifically officer related hirings.…
