There are two types of scanners being used by the TSA in airports. One is a "millimeter wave" amd the other is a "backscatter" that uses X-ray. Do you remember when there was an X-ray machine in children's shoe stores/shoe departments so parents could see their children's feet inside a shoe to see if it looked like the shoe fit correctly? It was found that too many short X-rays were dangerous, even harmful so the machines were pulled. What's the difference when people are frequent flyers? BTW, Atlanta uses the 'backscatter', X-ray based scanners.
