After seeing the desperate Afghani's trying leave Kabul airport holding onto whatever parts of a jet they could grab hold to just made me wonder when the Mexican cartels would get there to organize flights..I imagine the coyotes could find a way to cram 4 or 5 times as many illegals into a C-130 than US military protocol allows and fly them to a make-shift landing strip near our Southern Border and get to America quicker.

From the "figures don't lie, but liars figure a lot" department - WTVM-TV9 headline/story: "SPLOST absentee ballot application open now * Voters in Muscogee County can now request absentee ballots for an upcoming vote on how some of their tax dollars will be spent. In June, the city held public meetings to plan where this money would go. * As Columbus (GA) continues to grow and expand, so does the need for major improvements. * Deputy City Manager Pam Hodge says citizens will be given the option to vote to approve a 1% increase in their sales tax to fund local projects. * ”The project list is a total of 400 million dollars,” Hodge added. * News Leader 9 spoke with citizens in the community that say they are in favor of this Tax. * Bill Harlan has lived in Columbus for a long time and he says these renovations are necessary" -- Where to start!

 

First, it's not a 1-percent tax increase.. at a minimum it's a 12.5-percent sales tax increase (from the current 8% going to 9%, but realistically, its a 25-percent increase from existing 4-percent in LOST/SPLOST taxes going to 5-percent in LOST/SPLOST taxes.

 

Secondly, how long will we be saddled with this tax? it's not likely to ever bring in more than $35,000,000.00 annually which would mean that with ZERO cost increases and ZERO inflation, AND ZERO interest rates on loans/bonds, it would take almost 12 years to generate the revenues to pay for $400,000,000.00 in projects, and based on the City (and MCSD's) poor maintenance records on our existing assets, Council will be back asking for another SPLOST to pay for replacing these projects BEFORE hey are paid for.

 

Thirdly, WTVM uses a plural claim to citizens in favor of it, yet mention but one single person "for" it in their claim... besides, at this announcement, I doubt any opposition was even invited to be there and be available to WTVM for opinion/comment.

 

\Fourthly. I looked on the City's "Finance Department's web page and see nothing about the project include in "the list".. Where can we find them?

 

Lastly.. "absentee ballots" are NOT available yet.. Requests for them are, but the ballots themselves won't be available until October 11th...

Did get a Council response on where the SPLOST project list could be located (https://www.columbusga.gov/Portals/0/pdfs/LatestNews/2021-SPLOST-Presentation-July.pdf) , and the first thing I noticed was that it appears the Government Center Project is now up to $200,000,000.00 when early discussions were in the $100M-to-$110 Million range to either renovate or tear down and completely replace the Government Center Tower.. Now it looks like the plans are to renovate the TOWER... then tear it down and replace it.. Wow! I really want to see the list of "bidders" on those two projects!!!

I wonder if any Columbus City officials figured out how much money the taxpayers could be saving if the City had purchased the old Carmike Buildings (on Broadway at 13th Street, and 3rd Ave at 13th Street) and made those the new Court and Sheriff's Buildings, and just built a smaller Services building at the current Tower site?

Once again, I wish Governor DeSantis would pull Norwegian Cruise Lines business license in Florida until Norwegian gets a universal "vaccine Passport" approved by every US state, and every country in the world. In order to "work", every government entity would have to approve of the same one.. Instead of trying to "embarrass Governor DeSantis, Norwegian Cruise Line could have just have made it a business decision to require all it's staff and customers to comply to vaccine and masks standards it sets for itself.
