One thing we know for sure is our Council has requested a referendum for anther SPLOST to build $350,000,000.00 worth of "expenses" over a 10 year collection period. Their "anchor" is a new Government Center, and Council hopes by throwing out an extra $240,000,000.00 in Special Interest Pet Projects, Council can get political support to pass it . My view is a definite "NO"! Now what I can be sold on is a Single Project SPLOST of $105,000,000.00 over 3-years (and not beginning until AFTER the existing TSPOST tax ends in 2022). We're entitled to be upset at how the Council has allowed a City Asset to deteriorate right in front of their eyes (6, plus the Mayor, have been there every year this Century, and another for most of them), the situation is not going to clear up by itself, but it's at the point that we have little choice but replace it (it would be pouring good money into a sewer to try and fix what was a poor construction job from the 1970s), but.. but it needs to stay in the same location, and Council needs to readjust its Budgeting Concept by allocating 15% of each years expected revenues into a "Maintenance Limited Fund" to pay for ongoing maintenance and save for long term maintenance. The current process has not worked.. and our experiences with the MCSD is a prime example of poor SPLOST results.

Noticed on Saturday that the NAACP Annual Convention was being aired on C-Span, so when we went to bed, I turned to watch a bit.. Got to hear Kamala Harris and Bill Weld address the .. as MSM-13 would call it... "crowd",, while no camera showed the "crowd".. and it was 10:00 PM in Detroit...it sounded like maybe 20-to-25 people were there. What I learned was that Kamala Harris wants to put convicted felons of drug crimes first in line for jobs for legal sales of marijuana . Guess this would eliminate police control of all workers in the alcohol industry as well, and then we saw Bill Weld, former MA governor and announced Republican candidate for president pander at the NAACP Annual Convention , ask the "crowd" to cross over in the New Hampshire primary and show America that Trump could be beat. Good grief, Weld's talking about New Hampshire.. which has a black population of 1.4%. The Republican Party should completely disassociate itself from him.

Though I cannot find the name of the purported school/school district, two 17 year olds testified under oath at a House Committee on Oversight and Reform hearing that a Juul representative came to a classroom their freshman year and told the class that vaping tool Juul was "totally safe". Two judges..one East Coast and one West Coast, just proved my point that no single judge should be able to override a Presidential or Executive Order. One of the judges approved Trump's asylum conditions, and the other ruled against it. My point has been that a challenge of Presidential Order should have to be heard by a panel of 3-to-5 District Court Judges, and if the majority favors the Presidential Order individual challenges can work themselves through channels without stopping the order until the US Supreme Court rules, and if the majority agrees with the challenge, then the issue be sent straight to the US Supreme Court for definitive action.

Hey Council...here's my 2-cents worth ( and no bill will be sent).. how about keeping the court numbers where they are, then double the jail space..By doing so, violent and habitual felons could then serve their complete sentences rather than get early releases, commit new crimes, and clog up the court system again and again.

You know.. Council feels that by adding $200,000,000.00 more for pet projects around town, it will get community support to vote for the 10 year SPLOST which will include a new Government Center... but this is not what Columbus needs... or deserves. SPLOST money can only be spent of projects... and cannot be spent on manning them or maintaining them, and one has to only look at the current Government Center to understand that this.. nor future Councils... will have the funds to do so. What's even worse is that the increased need for finds to do so will take away more funds from what we need to fix our streets and maintain structures we already have. Definitely vote "NO" on any proposed 10 year SPLOST.. and very carefully consider a 3 year SPLOST referendum to build a replacement Government Center.

I find it strange.. well, more than strange, that the two men killed in the plane crash in Americus, GA have not been identified (did a new Google this AM and still no new info). Surely the plane has ID numbers... maybe even a flight plan of sorts.. and surely ..if this was a routine situation, family members would be contacting officials..There's something fishy about this..

I believe the 'links' course for the British Open sold out.. I saw green fairways (aided by a sprinkler system), and first cut 'roughs' that reminded me of our local public courses. There were too many par or better rounds for a 3rd Rd in a "major". 46 of the 73 players who made the "cut" shot par or better in the 3rd round..almost 2 out of 3... this wrong for a "major" course.

Sunday Update: Severe weather/wind reduced the par or better scores to "just 26", but even that allowed too many (over 1/3rd) of the field to shoot par or better..

Said goodbye to an old friend last night... Seaside, FL. For the last 20 years, Seaside has been a favorite spot of ours.. to stay in or visit if we've booked elsewhere.. but that changed Wednesday night. Our favorite restaurant is there.. Great Southern.. and with all the different aspects/needs of our growing family, it took 3 cars to get everyone there. When we pull into the area, and tried to park.. all the available public parking outside the "circle" were blocked off and reserved for "Valet Parking". We succumbed to the "Valet Parking" and when we got to the registration area, we were hit with a $15.00 Per Vehicle" charge. I begrudgingly paid it, but when we left Great Southern, I left the owner a note saying we've always enjoyed his food and warmth all these years, but valet parking... FORCED valet parking... added $45.00 to our meal, and we won't be back.

 

As a retired retailer, the situation at Seaside showed me that many of those stores will be dying soon.. besides the outrageous valet parking fees, the other available public parking on "the circle: now has signs proclaiming "2 Hour Parking" and there's a reserved parking space for a parking ticket writer.

I was upset that the US National Women's Softball team wore orange jerseys in a game while representing the US here in Columbus the first week of July.. I said then that the USA team should only wear the colors of our country's flag.. I think it was not only intolerant.. but blasphemous.. that the US Women's soccer team would wear "rainbow" uniforms while representing.. and on American tax dollars... the USA.
