You know, with as many "lists" Columbus has made that cast us in a negative manner.. maybe it's time to revamp our Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors' Bureau practices.. when you throw in the crime stats and school testing numbers, Columbus isn't faring so well competing for new businesses.  Hey, Mayor Tom-LYING-son.. here's a real bunch of reasons to why newcomers  are buying outside the county limits...

L-E headline/story: "MUSCOGEE COUNTY TAX ASSESSORS * Chairman of board against tax rollback * Board Chairman Chester Randolph made the comments a day after Columbus Council passed a resolution calling for tax assessors to institute the freeze, shoving the board into the spotlight. *  “Folks want to roll it back to 2016, and I’m not even sure that they understand what they’re asking,” Randolph said in an interview with the Ledger-Enquirer. “... If we roll it back to 2016 values, you’re talking about folks that have a value that they’re happy with that might go up and they’re gonna sue. You’re talking about starting another appeals process, which is 45 days plus 30. You’re talking about a two and a half to three month process." -- You know, the only thing rolling back assessments to the 2016 values will do is GIVE homeowners enough time to research the new values for an August 14, 2018 appeal.. The assessments this year have caught too many people off guard and scrambling to accumulate areal information to use in comparison to the figures they hit with.. especially when homeowners have more than 2 acres of land attached to the maximum 2 acres the Homestead Exemption includes..

One other thing.. commercial property is now showing a 40% discount on FAIR MARKET VALUE... it may just be a " clerical error", but none the less it's showing up.. a great example is the recent transaction on the Carmike Office building.. the FMV shows a value of $4.3 MILLION, yet the Assessment Value is but $1.7 MILLION.. that translates into a LOSS of about $50,000.00 in tax revenues in the B.I.D.

Remember the case of the man on Kingsberry that shot and killed the intruder as reported in the Columbus L-E.. the intruder who was out early from a "5 to serve" sentence?  You know, not only does the dead man's family have a "wrongful death" case against the Pardon?Paroles Board for "early release" against the "5 to serve" sentence, but the poor guy that killed him has even a better case because of the emotional scars and baggage he'll carry with him the rest of his life.

On Monday, GA Governor Deal released the latest tax collection results... one of particular note is the Sales Tax collection numbers: "Gross Sales and Use Tax collections deposited during the month increased by $46.7 million, or 5.1 percent, compared to July 2016. Net Sales and Use Tax revenue increased by $24.7 million, or 5.1 percent, compared to last year when net sales and use totaled $484 million. The adjusted distribution of sales tax to local governments totaled $444.7 million, for an increase of $27.5 million, or 6.6 percent, compared to July 2016. " -- You know, our Mayor Tom-LYING-son budgeted for LESS sales tax revenues in this years budget...makes you wonder if it's because of her poor economic  leadership or because she trying to get more revenues elsewhere.. Let's see.. eeny-meeny... I got it ... BOTH!
