Soapbox Moment: Yesterday, a piece of mail arrived, addressed to my daughter, a UGA graduate, from Auburn University. I took liberties to open it.. it was a "fraud alert" notifying her that there had been a security breach in the computer files (HACKED), and her personal info had been "compromised" last September and that AU had just noticed and corrected the security flaw. I thought, "Huh?" She had applied to AU in 2006 at the beginning of her Senior year, but opted for another educational path (Go, Dawgs!). I thought... what in the hell is Auburn doing by still having her info (and my old credit card number for application fee) on hand? 8+ years after she made her decision, Auburn still hasn't purged her info from its system.. There are probably other schools holding such time bombs as well. It's time that our legislators correct this. A law requiring colleges/universities to delete all information received on applications if then school or student rejects admission. Knowing the history of schools being inefficient at following through on security issues, it may be necessary to make the schools' presidents and IT managers subjects to the death sentence for failure to do so in a timely manner.
