This November will be interesting..we have full scale write-in race for Clerk of Superior Court. Former Superior Court Clerk, Linda Pierce, was waylaid during the Democratic Party primary, and the person who won has absolutely no legal background which is a huge plus in running this office. There was no Republican entrant, so local Attorney Mike Garner has stepped up to the plate and is running as a write-in candidate. We are lucky that our current ballot set-up is electronic and writing in for a candidate is a lot simpler than olden times. I will be reminding Columbus to remember that we have a better choice, but we'll have to remember to do it.

The above item generated a flashback: Periodically, I used to go to our Personnel Department (versus today's "Human Resources Departments" in businesses) and review the recent employment applications to see if any recent applicants might have skills that fit a future project needs.. One application struck me between the eyes that "we have a problem". In the section asking for previous work experience (yes, you could actually ask applicants about those, then), I read one that said: "Non.... I just don graduated".. Local Columbus issue - Did you get your form letter from the City Planning Department about the proposed "overlay district" between River Road, J.R. Allen Parkway, and the Harris County line? I felt it interesting that if you want to speak in opposition to it, and have donated $250.00 or more in the last 2-years to any "local official of the City of Columbus", you have to fill out a Disclosure of Campaign Contributions form as required by Title 36, Chapter 67-A, Official Code of Georgia Annotated. While I think political influence should be transparent, I'd rather know who is pushing for this action and has contributed any amount  to these officials.

L-E story: " The largest fundraising arm for the victims of the Pulse nightclub attack reversed course Friday and will now distribute millions of dollars directly to families and survivors instead of through nonprofit agencies. *  The OneOrlando fund’s decision comes a day after the families of victims from previous mass shootings at Virginia Tech,Columbine High School and elsewhere said in a letter that they objected to the fund distributing money only to nonprofits. *  “We believe that donations that are collected in the wake of national tragedies for victims should be disbursed directly TO them,” the letter said. “That is why Americans are giving. To help the victims directly.” * Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, who along with other local officials is backing the efforts of OneOrlando, said officials heeded that advice. He said victims’ families and survivors need quick assistance for groceries, rent and medical expenses. So far, the fund has raised about $7.5 million. *  “We are going to make sure the funds go to the victims’ families. We have not worked out the details,” Dyer said." -- "we have not worked out the details"?  How about the fraud potential? How about IRS regulations concerning distributions? You know.. while everyone IS concerned,, and I mean everyone ... there needs to be even more concern about accounting and auditing the funds that have poured in from Americans from all walks of life.. Not having the "checks and balances" of a legitimate nonprofit organization just facilitates the greed of one or more people in distribution of these funds.. especially the distribution as "expenses/salaries" to the ones claiming the right to choose who gets what. Oh.. and whether or not your love and compassion is a IRS approved deduction next April.
