Online story: ""In 30 minutes, 18 state senators undid 50 years of civil rights in Wisconsin. Their disrespect for the people of Wisconsin and their rights is an outrage that will never be forgotten," said Democratic Senate Minority Leader Mark Miller. "Tonight, 18 Senate Republicans conspired to take government away from the people.: -- WRONG! 18 brave citizens restored the rights of the taxpayers and electorate to have their tax dollars well represented.

Online headline: " Blagojevich Asks Judge to Sentence Him for Lying" -- That's sorta like Br'er Rabbit asking Br'er Fox not to toss him into the briarpatch.

Online headline: "Tucson Shooting Suspect Jared Loughner Enters Not Guilty Plea" -- Guess he'll choose between the "David Copperfield" or "Flip Wilson" defense; either it was all an illusion or 'the Devil made him do it".

L-E headline/story: "Thousands on state rolls may see jump in premiums * Plan’s $250 million shortfall means 692,000 could be hit with extra $100-$200 a month in costs * The State Health Benefit Plan insures 692,000 state workers, agency retirees and dependents, as well as school system employees. The state is a self-insurer, which means it provides money for the fund and pays the health insurance claims itself. Employees now pay about 25 percent of the cost while the government covers the other 75 percent. * Bill Tomlinson, a retired former state budget director, said the average retiree on a state pension makes about $28,000 a year and can’t afford to pay an additional $1,200 or $2,000 a year in premiums. “I think it is atrocious because they have known they were going in the hole for a year,” he said" -- There is some truth in Tomlinson's statement...it is atrocious that individuals think other taxpayers should pay for their personal benefits.

L-E headline: "Gingrich: Patriotism contributed to infidelity " -- Woe\w! Can't you see Bill Clinton slapping himself upside his head (ala a V-8 commercial) and saying, "Why didn't I think of that!"

Walter Williams' column in today's L-E is right on target (congrats to the L-E for giving Williams column the premium slot on the editorial page, too), and supports the theory that people should not be allowed to vote in elections where the candidates set their salaries and benefits. Fortunately, one such loophole has been fixed. The MCSD can no longer schedule SPLOST elections on the date of its choice when it thinks general voter interest is lax, and it can depend on the bloc vote of its employees and their families.
