The Breakfast Club - August 6, 2010

Online story: "WASHINGTON — The number of Americans who are receiving food stamps rose to a record 40.8 million in May as the jobless rate hovered near a 27-year high, the government reported yesterday. * Recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program subsidies for food purchases jumped 19 percent from a year earlier and increased 0.9 percent from April " -- Though it's not, isn't it 'cute' that the acronym is called "SNAP"? It's not cute in that now 1-in-8, that's 12+% of our nation, is eating off the labors of others.

Isn't our MCSD compassionate....NOT! Because of the heat, students will be allowed to drink water (under limited circumstances) on the school buses, and divers will be allowed to open the windows as they plod along from stop-to-stop. Bet next year the MCSD board will be retro fitting the buses with air conditioning (I can't imagine that much money being spent of buying buses that aren't air conditioned, but that may just be me) instead of going back to basics of starting school after the old traditional date of Labor Day.
---
L-E headline: "Columbus extends pool season on weekends only" -- Imagine that! If not for the "record high temperatures", the city was going to close the pools this week. DOH! Welcome to August! When student aged citizens should be out swimming and playing, our school system wants to bunch them up in un-air conditioned buses, and cram them into classrooms. No wonder obesity has become such a factor!
---
From a fellow BCer: "I called my stockbroker this morning and asked him what I
should be buying. He said, "Canned goods and ammunition." -- The truth shall set you laughing.
---
Last year, the Wall Street Journal had an article redefining the American concept we all know by heart. From the journalist's 'pen' comes, "The land of the sorta free and the home of the heavily indebted " as a replacement option for our National Anthem. Wonder what the writer thinks today, one year later?

The government announces that a job increase in the service industry is a signal the economy is recovering... don't listen to those DIM/DUMBs; what an increase in jobs in the service industry really signals is that small businesses are working longer, harder hours and that the small business owners are not having enough time to go home for a leisurely meal, so they are having to use drive-thru fast food restaurants more.
---
Online story: "(Christina) Romer, the head of the Council of Economic Advisers, announced her resignation Thursday, effective Sept. 3. She becomes the second high-level Obama aid to leave this summer, following the resignation of White House Budget Director Peter Orszag. * She will return to her job as a professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley. -- Undoubtedly with a "Mission Accomplished" banner waiting for her at Berkeley.
---
Online headline: " Mayor of Trenton, NJ Faces Foreclosure" -- Shades of Diogenes! Has an honest politician finally been found?
---
L-E headline: "Alabama hopes sales tax holiday this weekend stimulates economy" --
Hey, why doesn't GA think of something like this....oh...GA used to do this, but canceled this year....what little gain in sales tax revenue GA/Cities with LOST/SPLOST will get will be 'lost' when business profit taxes are due.
---
L-E's "Thought for Today": “A successful lie is doubly a lie; an error which has to be corrected is a heavier burden than the truth.” — Dag Hammarskjold, U.N. Secretary-General (1905-1961). -- No wonder our grandchildren will still be paying for the promises of potUS Nero-bama, Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, Frank, and CNN long after we pass on.
---
From L-E's "Today in History": "In 1890, convicted murderer William Kemmler became the first person to be executed in the electric chair as he was put to death in New York." -- How about a 120 birthday gala! Let's put everyone on death row in electric chairs all at once and watch the fireworks show! Bet death row might see a decline in prospective residents. When is the next milestone birthday for hanging and firing squads deaths?
---
L-E headline: "R E A LLY ? * Colorado hailstone sets records" -- Hmmm, cam brimstones be far behind?
