The Breakfast Club - August 3, 2010

In Virginia, an illegal alien awaiting deporation was released for the weekend. While DUI, he killed a nun. Why is it so hard for our government to be responsible for safeguarding American citizens?

Deja vu? Did I hear potUS Nero-bama copy Bush 43 by saying "mission accomplished" RE: Iraq?
---
Neil Cavuto of Fox News Channel should be given the job of conducting live interviews in each Congressional district of every incumbent seeking re-election to Congress. He ate Pennsylvania Congressman Chaka Fattah, DIMorat, alive on the Congressman's attempt to justify removing the Bush tax cuts. If every Congressman/Senator had to be prepared to answer Cavuto's questions, you can bet none would ever vote again on a bill they hadn't read cover-to-cover.
---
Online story: "No, Oprah wasn't there but plenty of other famous faces attended Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky's weekend wedding. * Actors Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and producer Steve Bing were among 400-500 guests. " -- Excuse me? I do believe Oprah being there would have overtrumped the rest of the celebrities combined.
---
Listening to potUS Nero-bama address the DAV in Atlanta, you have to wonder whether there were many people in the audience; every time the potUS mentioned his personal accolades, there was only a smattering of clapping.
---
Guess potUS Nero-bama had to go to Atlanta to address the DAV. Can you imagine him sending Joe Biden back to an event where Biden might ask another person in a wheelchair to stand up and take a bow?
---
If you wonder what's wrong with the economy, especially the auto industry, you must consider the sales tax as a major problem. If I spend $50K on a new car, the 6% GA/City salestax is $3,000.00. I can remember when $3,000.00 would buy a respectable new car (or 2 in some cases).
---
WTVM9 headline/story: "$8 leads to fatal shooting$8 leads to fatal shooting * Police say the victim and a 28-year old male suspect were fighting but later parted ways. * When the suspect came back this morning to apologize, police say Brown attempted to attack him with an aluminum bat. That's when the suspect pulled out a gun and shot Brown in the chest. * Police are treating this as a death investigation and not a murder case." -- DOH! You know, when I go somewhere to apologize for something, I always carry my gun with me...NOT!
---
Online headline: "Department of Justice Accuses Oracle of Fraud" -- Man, that's a pot trying to call a kettle a politically incorrect color.
---
Online headline: "What's the Volts MPG? There's no easy answer." -- Lets see.. according to the story, the Volt gets 40 miles on the battery, and can get 300 miles on 10 gallons of gas, it looks like the range of a Volt is 340 miles before filling up with another 10 gallons, so 340 miles divided by 10 equals 34 MPG, but goes down from there if you have to add more gas before you recharge the batteries. That's what's wrong with government control; no one running government businesses seems to know basic math solutions!
---
From online story: "The actress was released from jail after serving 13 full days of her 90-day sentence for violating her probation stemming from a 2007 DUI. Lohan was freed early due to good behavior and overcrowding at the jail." -- The 'overcrowding' I can believe; the 'good behavior' is probably a joke...isn't it?
---
This may be moot by today/tomorrow, but if BP is banking only on plugging the oil well by drilling in lower and filling with cement, what will be the back-up plan if the existing oil pipe gets screwed up by the attempt and becomes unsolvable? Why aren't they tackling a way to put a 'hose-type' pipe on the new surface plug, then opening the valves and just retrieve the oil?
---
From a local website catering to "moms": "The first day of school is just a week away. If you haven't purchased school supplies yet, save your money and head to Alabama this weekend. * Once again, Alabama will hold its annual sales tax holiday giving shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, and clothing free of state sales or use tax. * Georgia, unfortunately, will not have a tax free weekend this year. -- Once again, GA legislators confuse facts with fiction. I'll bet most of them think that by eliminating the 'no sales tax weekend', there will be more tax revenue for them to spend. WRONG! What will happen is that more shoppers will head to states/internet sites that have no sales taxes. Georgia retailers will lose business, and the state of Georgia will also lose from lower business/income tax revenues.
---
One other legislator error is that by not having the tax-free weekend, GA retailers will have to promote lower sales prices, which in turn, means lower sales tax revenues, and the likelihood less people will be hired for sales positions.
---
From a fellow BCer: India is set to have a car that runs on compressed air by next summer. I'll bet with all the politicians we have, some entrepreneur could have a car that runs on hot air, and that would leave the Indian car gasping for air!
---
The attempt to build a 13 story mosque at Ground Zero highlights how inefficient the political process is at getting things done. It's almost 9 years sine 911, and it's still a hole in the ground.
---
From the "it's not one world" department - L-E headline: "6 guards poisoned, beheaded in Afghan bank heist" -- Now, what would be wrong with waterboarding the perpetrators?
---
L-E headline/story: "Fidel Castro leads ceremony unveiling his new book * The new book runs nearly 800 pages * Castro has said he is already working on a follow-up book. -- What's going to be the title of this one, "Obama, Chavez & Me"?
---
In a letter in the L-E today, Robert Sharpe, Policy Analyst, Common Sense for Drug Policy, Washington, D.C. applauds Dusty Nix's stance that reducing the penalty of one drug to the similar penalty of another form of that drug is a solution to a problem is warped. If any adjustments should be made, it should be to toughen the weaker penalty.
