Well, the Columbus GA area elections were held yesterday, and, sadly, a major issue reared its ugly head ... again... about the timing of the election being in the best interest of Columbus GA's current and future interests.. an atrocious E-SPLOST was passed with less than 18,000 votes cast which hardly represents the best interest of the community nor surrounding area.. Columbus has some 100,000 plus registered voters, but less than 12,000 saddled us with not only a $290,000,000.00 tax over the next 5 years, but also saddled us with a $90,000,000.00 bond debt which will take over $5,000,000.00 annually in interest collected from our property taxes for the run of the bond's life. Now, what's even more deceptive than how few Columbusites voted for it is that the Columbus Public School System (MCSD) has over 6,000 employees, and most, along with their spouses/family members, had a special personal interest in voting for it, and their combined vote power overwhelms the vote of non-school employees. I was assured by an area legislative member that a bill is moving through the Capitol building to rightfully require all future TAX referendums be limited to the November General Election dates. Hey, local legislators, " get it done"!

The state wide GA Primary and our local Columbus GA election being held when it is has again proven that there is literally NO NEED for the 3 week “early voting period”.. it’s just an unnecessary expense. And for the November dates, an early voting period consisting of the Saturday and Monday before Election Tuesday would be way more than adequate.
